In July, my brother married a fabulous woman.  I am happy to add Kendra to my world as the sister I always wanted and now have!  Part of the wedding celebration was a girls night out for dinner in Wilmington, NC.  While savoring a wonderful creme brûlée at Brasserie du Soleil, I commented on how much I loved this treat and how I like to have it every where I travel.  One of the gals joked that I should do a blog about all the places I eat it at – extolling the virtues or decrying failures.  A sort of road trip desert journal.

I figured the easiest way to do this would be include it in the blog I already have going.  So – theatre lovers: let me introduce you to the best desert creation in history.  And Creme Brûlée lovers: let me introduce you to the creative and passionate world of theatre.  Feel free to mingle!

(It never crossed my mind to take a picture before I started eating.  So here is our first sample of Creme Brûlée – or the dish it came in:)

Hello my peeps!  Sorry it has been a while.  Catch up (Directors Lab West, finally relaxing in my own home – or repainting, etc) will come soon but for now, I wanted to talk about where I am at the moment and what I am up to these days!

Join me in Ada, Ohio!  Home of Ohio Northern University and my current production of THE LIAR by David Ives.  ONU is a beautiful campus kind of in the middle of no where.

I am in a lovely house just off campus in my dad’s home state.  Never thought I would get back to Ohio after all these years, but what a great project to bring me back with!  This play is hysterical, my cast is exuberant, my creative team is awesome and the Communications Department folks are so welcoming and supportive.  All this makes for a great playground to explore 17th century France!

We have had a week of “boot camp” before classes start.  Intensive straight sixes until my students’ days are taken over with other distractions.  I like this way of getting started!  Campus has been kind of quiet – the only folks in the dining hall have been the football team, the marching band and us theatre geeks!  We have immersed ourselves in movement and ensemble building exercises; and we got a rough draft of Act One on our feet.  The rest of the student body moved onto campus this weekend and we will shift to night rehearsals on Wednesday.  And I start teaching on Friday!

Road trip to the Walmart tomorrow night courtesy of my awesome stage manager, Brandea.  Very excited – groceries, supplies and maybe some more weather appropriate clothes!  (You would think with all the cross country traveling I have been doing that I would be better at guessing what to pack.  You would be wrong!)

More to come soon.  Now I need to take a deep look at the duel in Act One – a farcical take on the old tradition: think Looney Tunes meets 1940’s boxing meets badly done ballet!

Huge thanks to Laguna Playhouse again for the fabulous digs they have put me in during TICKLED PINK.
Whale AND dolphin sighting during my morning walk along the beach today.
WOW!!!

Pink in Laguna April 9, 2012

Sorry for the delay in the update.  Since so much has happened I am gonna keep it simple and pictorial.  Here we go:

Bangor was kind enough to give me one last snow before I headed back home.

Here is the courtyard in front of the Chuck late one night after a preview.

And then we came to opening night!

That’s me bundled up in the lobby!

After a wonderful month in Maine, it was time to say goodbye –

to the fantabulous folks at Penobscot Theatre, my charming hosts at the Charles Inn, and…

Hailey – our hotel mascot!

I got in a brief visit to Boston to play with my besty, Megan, and her besty, Topher.

Please note the BEST name of a bar EVER!!!!

And then home to LA, a howdy to my beloved KC and on to Laguna Beach.  Having a blast working with Martin Bergman, Rita Rudner and the awesome folks of TICKLED PINK at Laguna Playhouse.  Many thanks to Annie Wareham for the opportunity.  And for the REALLY cool digs (as you can see by the view from my front door!)

My awake dreams are pretty great right now!!!

Home stretch March 26, 2012

After several days of record breaking 80+ degree heat in Bangor, we went into tech as the temps dropped back to freezing.  Some are sad to see the beautiful days go but I gotta tell you, it makes two long tech days easier to get through if you aren’t yearning for the sunshine outside!  (Besides, I already had to go out and buy cooler clothing and now my suitcase is going to be overweight for the return flight.)

And our tech went really well.  You know you have a fantabulous team when you get through the show fast enough to have time for scene work on Saturday night and get in two solid dress/tech runs on Sunday.  It looks and sounds BEAUTIFUL!!!  The story telling continues to grow and strengthen.  Now it should get “stronger, faster, bigger, better”!!

Tomorrow is our first audience and it is a “Pay what you want” so it could get VERY interesting!  Alice joins us tomorrow as well so I am anxious to get her response.

We open this weekend and then I am back to LA.  Actually, on to Laguna Beach to assist Martin Bergman on his and Rita Rudner’s new comedy TICKLED PINK at Laguna Playhouse.  Thanks tons to Annie Wareham for bringing me in on the project.  I can’t wait to work with Martin and spend several weeks at the beach!  Thaw out after Maine, right?

Cheers to all!

Bangor is Burning! March 11, 2012

No one panic.  It isn’t really.  It has just been pointed out to me that something in Bangor is always catching fire.  And that makes sense if you count the number of sirens that I have been hearing every day.  These fire trucks apparently have new sirens and they are VERY loud and must be very proud of them!

We are almost half way through the show with our first pass at blocking.  It is really coming together.  It is such a joy to work with Alice on her play because she is such a giving, thoughtful and creative writer.  I hope we make her proud!

Happy to report Aubrey, Dylan and I found a pretty great Mexican restaurant tonight.  Just up the road near the University in Orono.  I rocked the virgin margarita!

We should finish blocking in the next few days and start playing on the stage.  Will post more then!  Maybe it will have warmed up by then?
